Year 12 Maths: Complete Guide to HSC Mathematics

Year 12 maths is where everything comes together. The choices you make about which course to take, how to study, and when to start exam preparation will significantly affect your HSC result and your ATAR.

This guide covers the four HSC Maths courses, how to choose between them, and how to plan your Year 12 maths preparation.

The four HSC Maths courses

NSW offers four HSC Mathematics courses:

Mathematics Standard 2 (2 units) The most popular course. No calculus. Focuses on practical maths: financial mathematics, statistics, networks, and measurement. Designed for students who don't need calculus for university.

Mathematics Advanced (2 units) Calculus-based. Covers functions, trigonometry, differentiation, integration, financial mathematics, and statistics. Required for many university STEM courses.

Mathematics Extension 1 (1 unit, taken with Advanced) Extends Advanced with harder calculus, combinatorics, vectors, and proof. Often required or recommended for engineering and actuarial science.

Mathematics Extension 2 (1 unit, taken with Extension 1) The hardest maths course in the HSC. Adds complex numbers, further calculus, mechanics, and formal proof. Taken by students aiming for top engineering and science programs.

How to choose your course

Check university prerequisites first

Before anything else, look up the maths prerequisites for every university course you're considering. Don't guess. Go to the university websites and check.

Common prerequisites:

If your target course requires Advanced, don't take Standard 2. If it only requires Standard 2, taking Advanced won't hurt but it's not necessary.

Be honest about your ability and motivation

Advanced Maths requires consistent practice. If you struggled with Year 10 5.3 pathway or you're not willing to put in regular study, Advanced will be painful.

Extension 1 and 2 require even more commitment. The drop rate from Extension 2 is significant. Most students who start it in Term 4 don't finish it.

Consider scaling

Maths courses scale differently. Extension 2 has the most generous scaling (a raw mark of 70 can scale to 90+). Extension 1 and Advanced also scale well. Standard 2 scales less favourably.

But scaling only helps if you actually perform. A 90 in Standard 2 is better than a 60 in Advanced that scales to 75. Don't take a harder course purely for scaling if you can't handle the content.

What's in each course

Standard 2

Five topics: Algebra, Measurement, Financial Mathematics, Statistical Analysis, and Networks. No calculus. The exam is 100 marks (15 MC + 85 short-answer), 3 hours.

Advanced

Six topics: Functions, Trigonometric Functions, Calculus (Differentiation), Calculus (Integration), Financial Mathematics, and Statistical Analysis. Calculus is 35-45% of the exam. The exam is 100 marks (10 MC + 90 short-answer), 3 hours.

Extension 1

Everything in Advanced, plus: Combinatorics, Vectors, Mathematical Induction, Integration by Substitution, Differential Equations, and Binomial Distribution. The exam is 70 marks (10 MC + 60 short-answer), 1.5 hours.

Planning your Year 12 maths preparation

Term 4 (Year 11 → Year 12 transition)

This is when you start the HSC course. The content begins immediately. Don't coast.

Terms 1-2 (Year 12)

Build your knowledge topic by topic. Don't worry about full past papers yet.

Term 3

Start transitioning to exam preparation.

Term 3 (final 6-8 weeks)

Full exam preparation mode.

Final 2 weeks

Consolidation. No new content.

How much time should you spend?

For a 2-unit course (Standard 2 or Advanced): 8-10 hours per week including class time.

For Extension 1 (3 units total): 12-15 hours per week.

For Extension 2 (4 units total): 15-20 hours per week.

This includes class time, homework, practice questions, past papers, and review. If you're spending significantly less, you're probably not doing enough. If you're spending significantly more, you may be neglecting other subjects.

Common Year 12 maths mistakes

Choosing the wrong course. Taking Advanced when you should be in Standard 2 (or vice versa). Check prerequisites and be honest about your ability.

Not starting early enough. The HSC course starts in Term 4 of Year 11. If you coast until Term 1 of Year 12, you're already behind.

Not tracking mistakes. Doing lots of practice without tracking errors means you keep making the same ones. A mistakes journal is essential.

Only doing past papers. Past papers are important but they're not the only resource. Topic-specific practice, concept review, and weak-area targeting all matter.

Neglecting other subjects. Maths can consume all your study time if you let it. Set a cap and stick to it. Your other subjects matter for your ATAR too.
