HSC Maths Extension 2: Complete Guide (2026)

Extension 2 is the hardest mathematics course in the NSW HSC. It's a 1-unit course taken on top of Advanced (2 units) and Extension 1 (1 unit), giving you 4 units of maths. If you're reading this, you're either considering it or already in it and looking for survival strategies.
This guide covers the syllabus, the exam, and how to manage what is genuinely one of the most demanding courses in the HSC.
What is Extension 2?
It's a 1-unit extension that goes significantly beyond Extension 1. You must be enrolled in Extension 1 to take it. The content is university-level in places, particularly complex numbers and mechanics.
Extension 2 is valued highly by universities. It often comes with bonus ATAR points or is treated favourably in early entry schemes for engineering, science, and mathematics degrees. The scaling is also generous because the cohort is strong.
Should you take it?
Realistically, Extension 2 is for students who:
- Are finding Extension 1 comfortable, not just survivable
- Are prepared to spend more time on maths than on any other subject
- Enjoy mathematical thinking and problem-solving
- Are aiming for engineering, advanced science, or mathematics at university
The drop rate is significant. A lot of students start Extension 2 in Term 4 and drop it by Term 2. That's fine. Better to try and drop than to wonder if you could have handled it.
Syllabus topics
Extension 2 has four major topic areas. Each is substantial.
1. Complex numbers
The biggest new concept in the course. You'll learn about the imaginary unit i, complex number arithmetic, the complex plane (Argand diagram), modulus and argument, polar form, De Moivre's theorem, roots of complex numbers, and factorising polynomials over the complex numbers.
Complex numbers appear in nearly every Extension 2 exam and are worth a significant chunk of marks. The concept is unfamiliar and takes time to click. Once it does, the questions become more pattern-recognition than problem-solving.
Key skills: arithmetic in Cartesian and polar form, converting between forms, finding roots, sketching on the Argand diagram, solving polynomial equations with complex roots.
2. Further calculus
Extends the calculus from Extension 1 significantly. Integration by parts, integration by partial fractions, harder substitution, recurrence relations for integrals, and volumes of solids of revolution.
This is where the integration toolkit gets serious. You need to look at an integral and immediately know which technique to use. That only comes from doing hundreds of problems.
Key skills: integration by parts (LIATE rule), partial fraction decomposition, recognising when to use substitution vs parts vs partial fractions, calculating volumes using both the disc and shell methods.
3. Mechanics
Physics-heavy content using calculus. Projectile motion, simple harmonic motion, and resisted motion. You'll set up and solve differential equations that model physical situations.
This topic rewards students who understand the physics. If you also take HSC Physics, this section will feel familiar. If you don't, you'll need to spend extra time understanding the physical setup before doing the maths.
Key skills: setting up force diagrams, writing and solving differential equations for motion, understanding the difference between projectile and resisted motion, solving SHM problems.
4. Proof
Formal mathematical proof. This extends the induction from Extension 1 to include proof by contradiction, proof by contrapositive, and harder induction proofs. You'll also work with inequalities and harder algebraic proofs.
Proof questions are where the exam separates the top students. They're open-ended, require creative thinking, and you can't rely on memorised procedures.
Key skills: writing clean, logical proofs, knowing when to use contradiction vs contrapositive vs induction, proving inequalities using AM-GM and other techniques.
The exam
The Extension 2 exam is a single paper:
- 10 multiple-choice questions (10 marks)
- Short-answer questions (60 marks)
- Total: 70 marks, 1 hour 30 minutes, plus 5 minutes reading time
Same format as Extension 1 but the questions are significantly harder. Time pressure is intense. Many students don't finish.
Mark distribution
Complex numbers and calculus each make up about 25-30% of the exam. Mechanics and proof each make up about 15-20%. But questions often combine topics (e.g., a complex numbers question that requires integration), so the boundaries aren't clean.
How to survive Extension 2
Start early and don't stop
Extension 2 punishes procrastinators more than any other course. The content is cumulative. If you don't understand complex numbers in Term 4, you'll struggle with everything that builds on them in Terms 1-3.
Set up a routine where you do Extension 2 practice every single day, even if it's just 30 minutes. Consistency beats intensity for this course.
Do problems, not reading
You cannot learn Extension 2 by reading the textbook. The concepts only make sense after you've struggled through problems. When you read a worked solution and think "that makes sense," you haven't learned anything. You need to attempt the problem yourself, get stuck, and then see the solution.
Keep an error log
This matters more in Extension 2 than in any other course. The questions are complex enough that you'll make errors in multiple places. Track every error: was it algebraic, conceptual, or a misread? Patterns will emerge that tell you exactly what to fix.
Use multiple resources
No single textbook covers everything well. The Cambridge Extension 2 textbook is the standard, but supplement it with past papers, online resources, and your teacher's notes. Different explanations of the same concept will click differently.
Don't neglect your other subjects
The most common Extension 2 mistake is letting it consume all your study time. You still have Advanced, Extension 1, and probably 8-10 other units. Set a time cap for Extension 2 and stick to it. A Band 5 in Extension 2 plus good marks elsewhere beats a Band 6 in Extension 2 with failed other subjects.
Common mistakes
Algebra errors. Extension 2 questions involve long chains of algebra. One sign error early in a proof or integration can make the entire question unsalvageable. Check each line as you go.
Wrong integration technique. Using substitution when you need parts, or vice versa. This comes from lack of practice. Do enough integrals and the right technique becomes obvious.
Sloppy proof writing. Induction proofs need all four steps. Contradiction proofs need clear setup. Missing steps or unclear logic loses marks even if your conclusion is right.
Mechanics setup errors. Getting the physics wrong before you start the maths. Draw the force diagram carefully. Label everything. Check your signs.
Time management. Spending 20 minutes on a 4-mark question and leaving a 7-mark question blank. Know when to move on.
