People think HSC maths is unpredictable. It isn't. NESA reuses question structures every year. They swap the numbers, not the thinking.

The repeating patterns

Multiple choice (Q1-10) tests breadth, not depth. These are warm-up marks. If you're losing more than 2 here, it's a content gap, not a strategy problem.

Short answer (Q11-15) usually has one question per syllabus area. Probability, trigonometry, functions, calculus each get a look-in.

Extended response (Q16 and up) is the real test. Question 16a is often approachable. 16c is the Band 6 filter.

A typical calculus question

You'll get a function, asked to find the derivative, then a stationary point, then maybe the nature of that point.

f(x)=x33x2+2f(x) = x^{3} - 3x^{2} + 2

To find stationary points:

f(x)=3x26x=3x(x2)f'(x) = 3x^{2} - 6x = 3x(x - 2)

So stationary points at x = 0 and x = 2. Set the second derivative to classify them. This pattern appears almost every year.

The probability one

P(AB)=P(AB)P(B)P(A \mid B) = \frac{P(A \cap B)}{P(B)}

Know this cold. Half the probability marks in the state are lost because students write P(A and B) when they mean P(A|B).

How to use past papers
