The HSC maths exam isn't won in the exam hall. It's won in the two weeks before, and protected in the 24 hours around it.
The night before
Don't study new content. You will not learn a new topic at 11pm and you will wreck your sleep. Instead:
- Pack your bag: approved calculator (and a spare if you have one), spare batteries, ruler, pencils, eraser, sharpener, a water bottle.
- Print the NESA formula sheet. You get it in the exam, but reading a familiar version calms you down.
- Set two alarms. Charge your phone in another room.
Morning of
- Eat protein, not sugar. A crash at question 12 is real.
- Arrive 20 minutes early. Rushing spikes your cortisol and you'll misread the first question.
- Use the 10-minute reading time. Don't touch the pen. Plan which questions you'll definitely do, and in what order.
During the exam
- Do the questions you're strongest at first. Early wins build momentum.
- Show all working. Even a wrong final answer with the right method gets partial marks.
- If you're stuck for 90 seconds, move on. Come back later with fresh eyes.
The 5-mark questions
This is where Band 6s are made. They look scary because they combine topics, a bit of calculus with a bit of trig. Break them into steps:
- What is the question actually asking?
- Which formula or technique applies?
- Can I find a simpler sub-part first?
The full plan that gets you here is in our 8-week HSC maths revision plan.
After
You can't change it. Don't debrief with friends for an hour, it only stresses you for the next exam. Move on.
