A Band 6 in HSC Maths (90+) isn't genius, it's consistency. The marking centre gives points for specific things. Learn them and you pick up marks other students leave on the table.
Communication marks are free marks
Every extended question has communication criteria: clear working, correct notation, a sentence conclusion. Students chasing the "hard maths" skip these and lose 5-10% for nothing.
Show the method even when stuck
If you can't finish, write the first correct step. Partial credit is real and generous in maths. A wrong answer with the right method beats a blank.
The "hence" and "use the result above" traps
When a question says "hence", it means use what you just proved. Ignore that and start fresh, and you lose the communication mark and often wander into a harder path.
Exact values, not decimals
If the question uses fractions or surds, give the exact answer. Writing 0.707 instead of √2/2 drops the mark even when it's "the same number".
Practice like the exam
The biggest Band 6 difference is timed practice under exam conditions. You don't get faster at maths by understanding it. You get faster by doing it under pressure.
